Home buying the garage a jack of all trades

The Garage: A Jack of All Trades

Important aspects while exploring potential homes to buy include many different areas. For some people, the number of bedrooms or bathrooms can immediately determine whether or not a house remains in the running. For others, the condition of the basement. Porches, kitchens, windows, backyards, all of them meaning more or less for different people, all of them worth considering when looking at a tempting home. And what about garages? They often get the short shrift of our attention, a fact which we want to address today.

We don’t spend much time thinking about garages, possibly because we don’t spend much time in them. This doesn’t mean that they aren’t important. Garages are an auxiliary space where you store things that you perhaps don’t use every day, or things that are reserved specifically for the outdoors. You can think of them as a mixed-use space, part garden shed, part shelter, part open-concept for everything from workshops to mother-in-law apartments (zoning permitting!). Simply put, a garage might be far more valuable than you think.

Car Storage

When you aren’t using your car, where is it stored? While many people are content to leave their car on the street or parked in their driveway, the fact of the matter is that these are hardly secure locations.

For one thing, cars left outside are far more likely to suffer break-ins. They are also exposed to whatever the weather happens to do. Cars that suffer damage during hailstorms? Not in a garage. Car windshields cracked by falling black walnuts? Also not in a garage. A garage protects your car from extreme heat and extreme cold, something that can add years of life to tires and paint jobs. On the more cosmetic side of the equation, a garage will help keep your car from becoming stained by rain, falling leaves, and the stretchy ends of broken sticks.

Backyard Workshop?

People who purchase homes often find themselves amassing a large quantity of tools used for various DIY projects, improvements, and just plain tinkering. There’s something about the sensation of owning a home that brings out the builder in us all. Now, you can store these in the basement, but if you want to actually use them, an easy-to-access location is necessary. Enter the garage.

A designated space for tools that is also easy to access means increasing the likelihood that you’ll actually use those tools, and a garage is an ideal location for any large-scale project that might require a table saw or belt sander.

Ultimately, you might decide that the condition or existence of a garage doesn’t matter, and that is totally fine. The important thing is that you at least take the time to consider the question before it is too late.
