Selecting A Healthy Neighborhood
Prior to beginning the home-buying search, you might think that the process is fairly straightforward: you put an offer in on a home, that offer either gets accepted or it does not. It is often not until after you begin the process of searching for a home that you realize just how much effort a home-purchase can be, and that much of this effort is on the buyer’s side of the equation.
Time to face some facts: Americans love their cars. We spend so much time thinking about them, sitting in them, imagining what it would be like to have a better one that we often forget that many of us have attached to our own bodies a fairly reliable and efficient form of transportation. We are speaking here of our legs! And if it comes as a surprise to you that this plays a role in the selection of a house then you have yet to experience the joy of a walkable neighborhood.
Sidewalks add an almost unspeakable benefit to a neighborhood. They keep pedestrians safe, they help foster neighborhood community, and they offer an easily maintained strip of ground on which children can draw with chalk, run, and play without needing to worry much about being struck by a passing motorist. Living in a walkable neighborhood might not have made it to the top of your “must have” list, but it is definitely a good idea to reassess the situation, especially if you have or are planning on having children.
More and more cities are paying attention to the fact that more and more people are forgoing cars completely in favor of biking. Bike lanes, like sidewalks, are a marvelous gauge for the safety of a neighborhood as well as the conscientiousness of its inhabitants.
Even if you don’t fancy yourself a cyclist, a bike lane means that cars will be even further from your doorstep. This makes anyone walking along or playing on sidewalks even safer from passing cars. Bike lanes also point to the general health of a neighborhood, as more people riding bikes means less people languishing on their couches. Having healthy neighbors is a great way to help ensure that you are healthy yourself, something especially worth considering at this present moment.
Thinking of things like sidewalks and bike lanes when you go to showings of homes is a great way to help imagine what your future in the house might be like and are things everyone should consider before placing an offer on a piece of real estate.
