Reading Nooks and Private Rooms

If there’s one thing that a lot of us are preparing to spend a lot of time doing during the upcoming weeks and months, it’s staying in our houses. The spread of the coronavirus makes being indoors not only more necessary, but also more appealing as we consider the risks associated with going outside for even such mundane things as groceries. For people who have just recently purchased a home or who are in the market looking for a home, this can be a challenging time as there arises a unique need to locate spaces where we can feel safe within a limited set of rooms.

Some people are fortunate enough to have the space to reserve an entire room for themselves. If you’ve got an extra bedroom, or if you are looking towards putting an offer on a home with an extra room, you might consider transforming it into a personal retreat space. Set it up in a way that feels most life-giving to you, taking time to ask yourself whether or not removing many of the objects, repainting, or shifting the arrangement of furniture might transform an otherwise unusable area into a sanctuary.

If you’ve got a partner or if you share your home with others (be they children or adults), then the extra room might not be possible. In situations such as this, many people find that they are able to carve out somewhat smaller portions of an already established room for use as a reading nook! Reading nooks come in many different varieties, but they all share one thing: coziness. This is, after all, a space where you can curl up for hours with a cup of tea and a paperback and feel like the rest of the world just melts away.

Common features found in reading nooks include:

  • Candles
  • Incense
  • Notebooks and pens
  • Pillows
  • Blankets
  • A window
  • A chair or comfortable cushion
  • Silence

We realize that some or all of these things might be a challenge to obtain, and this is totally okay! Each of us will do the best we can given what we are handed, and your reading nook will be as unique as you are.

As we head into a second month of limited activity and uncertainty, having some corner of serenity to look forward to in your own home will become an increasingly valuable commodity. Crafting a reading nook or private room now will only reward you with greater returns in the future.
